Dear tia/poidogsanuenue,
Just this week, SEARA, Brazil's second largest pork producer, said that it will completely phase out the use of gestation crates, metal cages used to confine breeding sows in one of the most abusive practices in agribusiness.
In Brazil, most breeding sows are confined in these individual crates for the majority of their lives, unable to turn around or walk. Their suffering is intense and unrelenting.

SEARA is owned by JBS, the world's largest animal processing company. Together, their commitment will improve the lives of animals on a massive scale.
Crate-free purchasing policies are increasing globally in response to consumer demand for better animal welfare conditions. We're hopeful that more companies will follow the example set by JBS.

This lone stallion somehow escaped captureon Sunday in the Bureau of Land Management's massive Beatys Butte roundup underway now in Oregon. He now roams alone on a landscape where wild horses are being wiped out so that ranchers who sell beef to Whole Foods Market can graze more cattle there. Please take action today to ask Whole Foods Market to adopt mustang and burro safe policies by not providing a market for beef and lamb from animals grazed in federally designated wild horse and burro habitat. Let's use our consumer muscle to change this system that is rigged against our mustangs and burros!

.

.
AWHPC is urgently looking for permanent placement for several groups of wild horses rescued after they were rounded up and removed from the Virginia Range. If placement of these horses is not secured by the end of the month, most will be sold at a slaughter auction. Can you help these horses? If so, please email louise3270@sbcglobal.net. For more information on the horses who are desperate for new homes, please click below.

.

Last month, the BLM offered a rare public tour of its Indian Lakes short-term holding facility in Fallon Nevada, where 2,500 wild horses and burros are warehoused in feedlot conditions after being removed from their homes on the range throughout the West. Nevada resident Mary Cioffi attended the tour for AWHPC and filed an eyewitness report, which you can read by clicking below.

Breaking News!!!!!!!!! Defenders of Wildlife has just released that the state of Oregon has stripped our Wolves from all protection. They are now open game, for all hunters, this can lead to a complete disaster for all Wolves in the state of Oregon. The wolf population has not recovered sufficiently to deem this decision by the state's Fish and Wildlife Commission. Never has this happen, and it can lead to a bloodbath for our Wolves.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 9, 2015

Conservationists Criticize Precedent Setting State Wolf Delisting
SALEM, Ore. – Defenders of Wildlife says the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission’s decision today to remove state endangered species protections for wolves is premature and would likely lead to slowed or stopped wolf recovery in the state. No other species has been removed from the state’s endangered species list with a population of fewer than 100 individuals statewide or when they were still absent from a significant portion of their historic range.
Shawn Cantrell, Defenders of Wildlife’s northwest director, testified at today’s meeting and issued the following statement:
"We are deeply disappointed to see the Fish and Wildlife Commission approve a state delisting of wolves when only the barest minimum requirements have been met. The better and more cautious alternative would have been to downlist wolves from endangered to threatened and not delist them entirely. This would have continued to provide vital state protections for wolves, while also recognizing the progress the state has made to recover wolves in the eastern part of the state. More importantly, it would have left wolves fully protected in the western part of Oregon, where they are only just starting to expand and are in the earliest stages of recovery.
"Unfortunately, the commission decided to prematurely delist wolves without first updating and amending the Oregon Wolf Management Plan, which is overdue for a planned update. It will be critical that any subsequent revision of the plan maintains protocols for using non-lethal conflict avoidance tools, like livestock guarding dogs or fencing, to reduce potential livestock-wolf conflicts.
"Oregon recently has been a real leader emphasizing non-lethal conflict management between livestock and wolves so that wolves can continue their recovery in the state. Given the commission’s decision on delisting today, it will be all the more critical for Oregon to continue to emphasize and promote non-lethal strategies for allowing wolves and livestock to coexist on the same landscapes.
"Defenders has recently expanded its staffing presence in Oregon and intends to continue to work tirelessly for wolf conservation in the state through whatever means or opportunities that are available."

Please take the time to sign petitions when they are available and stand with Defenders of Wildlife and all the major organizations, who stand with the Wolves.  The Department of Fish and Wildlife from each state are there to protect and save endangered species. It is time that our VOICE IS HEARD. Whether in Florida, when the Department of Fish and Wildlife put a death sentence on the Black Bears, and 300 were murdered including cubs in just 2 days.  They then realized it caused a frenzy of killings, they are now we hope willing to work with organizations to set sanctuaries for these bears, and help them recover.   We now need to set precedence for our Wolf Population, lets speak loud and clear, and bring them back into protection.  Both the Bear and the Wolf are part of our heritage, for myself they are part of the Native American life for generations.  They are Aumakua's or spirit guardians, like in Hawaii, that protect and save.  We as a people need now to protect and save them from extinction.

sad-dog-cc-cameron-bennett-article-image-230PITTSBURGH, PA — Today the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), the nation’s leading legal advocacy organization for animals, released the top 5 animal-related crimes that are prosecuted in the United States. Though details of the laws vary from state to state, animal cruelty is illegal in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and these crimes can include felony charges.
ALDF and the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys are sponsoring the 5th Annual National Animal Cruelty Prosecution Conference, November 4 – 6, 2015, in Pittsburgh, PA. The conference includes three days of law enforcement-specific training to help police, animal control officers and prosecutors from across the nation secure justice for these voiceless victims.
Although the exact number of incidents will vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, according to Animal Legal Defense Fund, the most commonly prosecuted crimes are:
NEGLECT: the failure to provide adequate care for the animal to thrive.  Also included is severe Neglect, severe suffering which leads to death.
AFFIRMATIVE ABUSE: cruelty of this nature is carried out and leads to death.
ANIMAL FIGHTING: people causing injury and death in competition dog fighting.

BESTIALITY:  sexual crimes against animals, very Taboo!!!!

The Animal Legal Defense Fund has dedicated time and effort to ensure that Animal Cruelty is prosecuted to the full extent of the law.  Their nonprofit status helps provide assistance to other attorneys in prosecuting animal cruelty cases. ALDF often offers rewards to persons with information on the cases they are prosecuting.

They will continue to fight for stronger laws in every state in the nation to protect all animals from cruelty. This also includes, Zoos, Marine Life, Wildlife, Horses and Livestock regarding factory farming.  They made their mark and will continue to help in the saving of the Black Bears, in Florida.

SUCCESS!!!! WINNING THE FIGHT AGAINST THE KEYSTONE PIPELINE XL!!!

This is an historic moment, and many hundreds of thousands of concerned citizens have been fighting against this particular pipeline for a long time.. We've signed letters to our representatives, joined protests, petitions, and had the occasion to be arrested..

Victory doesn't happen every time, but we can make extremely loud noise and are voices will be heard.  When the Keystone pipeline was introduced seven years ago, it was revealed by experts that it would be and environmental disaster. Still many  thought it was inevitable that the pipeline would be approved..
Never stay quiet, voice your opinion, be tenacious in all you do. Work together as a team, fill the streets with petitions, and documentation of a disaster just waiting to happen.  Care 2 received 606,000 signatures on their  petitions against the pipeline. The Tar Sands Action sit-in at the White House was the largest civil disobedience action in the United States since 1977.

There is much work still to be done.  Care 2 is now working on stopping  the expansion of offshore drilling, to take bold action at the Paris climate talks next month, and above all, we all need accountability from all those who make these decisions.
OUR VOICES WERE HEARD!!!!!!!!!!
President Obama just confirmed it. Let's celebrate it.
Sign the petitions especially if one cares about our environment and the whole ecosystem..

Heart Disease in Cats, can be hard to detect, but if you are a cat owner, you know your cat better than anyone!

Most veterinarians divide cardiomyopathy in cats into three types:

 1.  Dilated Cardiomyopathy, the walls of the pet's heart balloon out, causing an enlarged, rounded, thin-walled weakened heart.
  2. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, the heart retains it classic shape but the walls of the heart thicken, reducing this muscle’s ability to pump blood.
  3. Restrictive Cardiomyopathy. In this form, scarring of the heart muscles prevent normal pumping action. The signs of all three forms in cats are similar and are ultimately due to a lack of oxygen supply to cells throughout the pet's body.

Causes of Cardiomyopathy in your cat!

Cardiomyopathy was a relatively common disease in cats fed generic cat foods or dog food. These foods were sometimes deficient in an essential amino acid for cats, taurine. A deficiency in this amino acid was discovered to be the cause of heart failure.  As well as in humans and dogs Taurine is very vital in the chain of amino acid for proper heart function.
Another known association with cardiomyopathy in cats is hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is quite common in older cats and becoming more so, as they age.  In this disease, the pet’s metabolic rate increases due to over-secretion of the thyroid hormone, thyroxine. The number of cases hyperthyroidism in cats has increased significantly in the last 25 years.

When a cat's thyroid is overactive, the pet's blood pressure and the workload on its heart muscle increase. This in turn will cause cardiac enlargement or heart muscle thickening.

Some suspect that prior viral infections, genetics or the lack of antioxidants may predispose the pet to heart failure.

Cardiomyopathy seems to be an inherited disease in Maine Coon and American Shorthair cats. It appears to also be more common in Persians cats than ordinary domestic shorthair cats. More male than female cats develop the disease.

What Symptoms Might I See In My Cat ?

Although dogs and humans often develop a moist cough when the heart looses its efficiency, cats rarely cough with this disease. Instead, they are often brought to veterinarians due to listlessness, rapid labored respiration, poor appetite and loss of body condition. At first glance these cats may look plump. But they are bony over their back and loins and what appears to be a plump tummy is actually an enlarged liver with fluid accumulation in the abdomen These signs signify that the disease is already quite advanced.

BusterThe sluggish flow of blood through damaged hearts commonly results in another serious problem, the formation of blood clots blocking major arteries.  If touched the femoral pulse within the rear legs is weak or absent and the limbs are cold to the touch. Although the clots usually dissolve slowly and limb function returns the underlying heart problem remains.

Hypertrophic form of cardiomyopathy often results in increased blood pressure or hypertension  Smaller blood vessels may burst under increased pressure particularly vessels within the retina of the eye. This can lead to retinal detachment and sudden blindness. To reduce the blood pressure as in humans and dogs anti-hypertensive drugs will be used. A number of agents called calcium channel blockers are available for treatment of hypertension and cardiac failure although many of these are not specifically licensed for cats. Examples of two drugs commonly used are benazepril (Fortekor®, Lotensin) and amlodipine ( Istin®, NORVASC).

How Do Veterinarians Diagnose Cardiomyopathy

A combination of signs discussed can lead us to suspect cardiomyopathy in your cat. Cats suffering from this disease are usually over the age of five. A firm diagnosis requires at
a minimum a chest X-ray, echocardiography or ultrasound image of the heart. An EKG (electrocardiogram) can also be diagnostic. An elevated free T-4 level will diagnose the presence of hyperthyroidism - a common finding in older cats with heart problems.

WE WILL ALWAYS BE TOGETHERWhat Treatments Are Available For My Cat

Treatment is first directed at correcting any underlying cause that may be responsible for the disease. Hyperthyroid cats need to have their thyroid condition alleviated with medication
.

Where no underlying cause is found, treatment for your cat maybe a class of medications called ACE inhibitors these improve cardiac function and diuretics will be used as in humans and dogs to remove pooled fluids Recommended of course low salt diets will always be helpful.

Always consult with your vet, when noticing the above symptoms.  Heart Disease develops rapidly in cats, and unfortunately cats do not have the survival rate as dogs or humans.
Be mindful of your cat's behavior and when in doubt, consult your veterinarian.

                    AMAZING PEOPLE AND THEIR ANIMALS

HAVE A HEART! Early diagnosis and treatment of Heart Disease can make all the difference in the world. As a pet owner myself, I needed to be aware of the signs of this deadly disease..

Coughing is a very common symptom of many illnesses, one of those being heart disease. Minor coughs will not last more than a few days. If the cough continues and lasts for more than a week, always consult with veterinarian. As in humans, difficulty breathing, labored breathing and shortness of breath, is another symptom to look into, specially when running, playing, even walks will can cause shortness of breath.

Noticing behavioral changes in your dog, not wanting to exercise, not accepting affection as rapidly as they did before, just being withdrawn are other symptoms that possibly your pet may have heart disease.

Poor appetite, is always a symptom of something, and accompanied by the other symptoms, consultation with your vet, maybe necessary.

Weight loss, as well as weight gain is definitely a symptom of heart disease.  Many dogs will gain, and you will notice distention of their abdomen, much like a potbellied look.

Fainting or just collapses for no apparent reason, weak upon getting up, are signs of many illnesses in your pet.  Heart Disease is one of many!

Edema, in the chest and abdomen area, and swelling of their extremities there is a very good chance of heart diseas

Dilated cardiomyopathy is the type of heart disease that does lead to CHF or commonly known as congestive heart failure .It is rather common for a dog’s failing heart to enlarge and no longer pump sufficient blood throughout the body

Primarily large breeds of dogs. Doberman Pinscher, Labrador Retriever, Deerhounds, Boxers, Irish Wolfhounds, Great Danes and Golden Retrievers are some of the breeds that suffer from this condition. Occasionally, Cocker Spaniels and other smaller breeds will develop the condition. Consult your veterinarian, as an EKG maybe warranted, and usually an abnormal rhythm will be detected.

Be mindful of the warning signs, as your pet will be counting on you to take the steps necessary for their wellness.
