Honey Bees vs Bumble Bees.. Since becoming a backyard novice beekeeper I have been asked by neighbors to help them understand the difference between the Honey Bee and the Bumble Bee. Many thought they were all the same, but I knew there were differences between the 2 species of bees. After researching I found that Bumblebees are robust, large around the middle, have alot more hairs on their body which are colored in yellow, orange and black. Their wings can be easily seen since they are dark in color and the tip of their abdomen is rounded. Bumble Bees are better at pollination, as they are weather resistant to cold and rain. They can at times specialize in certain species of flowers which is very good for our fruit trees. Bumble Bees typically nest underground, although nests can be found above ground on occasion. The Queen Bumble Bee nests and can live up to one year and overwinters at the nest site. Many of her workers as many as 100 or more, only live a few months. Bumble Bees are pollinators, they do make honey, but for their consumption, they do not make a surplus of honey for harvesting. Our Honeybees are more slender in body appearance, have fewer body hairs and wings that are more translucent and their abdomen is more pointed. They live above ground in hives and as many as 70,000 may live in one hive and each as previously mentioned have designated jobs in the hive. They too pollinate, make honey for their survival during the winters and do make a surplus of honey, as a gift to the beekeepers to extract. In general, honeybees and bumblebees are not overly aggressive, however, both will sting to defend themselves if threaten and definitely sting to protect their colony. The primary difference in their stinging behavior relates to the greater number of honeybees that sting when compared to bumblebees. While a honeybee only stings once and dies, a bumblebee is capable of stinging multiple times then adios goes on to the next flower. Hope you enjoy this article our bees are very unique and their species are so fascinating they could only be created by God!

The Honey Bee vs the Bumble Bee

Bumblebees vs. Honeybees: What’s the Difference, and Why Does it Matter?

Bees have been much in the news of late, and for the saddest of reasons: due to habitat loss, global warming, pesticides, and monocrop agriculture, their numbers are in sharp decline across the United States. The loss of bees and other threatened pollinators could damage not only the world’s economy, but also endanger its very ecosystem.
But not all bees are created equal: there are nearly 20,000 known species, differing widely in physical characteristics, pollination habits, behaviors, and habitat. And although we can’t be familiar with all of them, we can take a first step by considering two of the most common varieties: the bumblebee and the honeybee.

BUMBLEBEES VS. HONEYBEES: APPEARANCE AND HABITAT

Let’s get the taxonomy out of the way first. Although the various bumblebee and honeybee species both belong to the Apidae family, bumblebees belong to the Bombus genus and honeybees to Apis. Their appearance is different, as well.
Bumblebees are round and fuzzy; honeybees are smaller and thinner – it would be easy, in fact, to mistake them for wasps. And while honeybees have a clear distinction between head and abdomen, bumblebees are “all of one piece.” Honeybees also have two clear sets of wings: a larger set in front and a smaller set in back.
Close up of a honeybee
But it is in habitat where their dissimilarities are most clearly marked. Hyper-social honeybees live in hives with tens of thousands of their brethren: those hives can either be domesticated colonies kept by beekeepers or wild ones found in hollow trees. As their name suggests, they are honey producers, and their long-lived colonies survive the winter intact – the queen, in fact, can live for some three to four years.
Close up of a bumblebee
Bumblebees are social, too, but not to the same extent. Where honeybees build hives, bumblebees live in nests with up to a few hundred fellow bees. These nests are found exclusively in the wild (bumblebees are not domesticated), and can often be found in burrows or holes in the ground. In fact, the queen, which is the only member of a bumblebee colony to survive the winter, hibernates in the ground. Bumblebees are not honey producers – or rather, what they produce is for self-consumption in the nest.

BUMBLEBEES VS. HONEYBEES: POLLINATION AND FEEDING

Of the two groups, bumblebees are the better pollinators. The reason for this is eminently practical: as there are more species of bumblebees, there is a wider variety in lengths of tongue and, thus, the kinds of flowers they feed from. They are fast workers and, because of their larger bodies, can carry larger loads.
Bumblebee
Bumblebees are good at learning how to extract pollen from different flowers and can even specialize in certain species. And this greater flexibility makes them adept at cross-pollination, which is particularly important for fruit trees. Moreover, bumblebees are more resistant to weather conditions such as cold, rain, and limited light.
The one advantage honeybees have is communication: they actually perform a dance to let their fellow workers know where good supplies of pollen can be found! Although this is good for their colony and honey production, it can actually be a disadvantage in terms of pollination. Whereas honeybees will rush off to mine a certain pollen source, bumblebees will stay around, patiently working an extended area until it is fully pollinated.
Honeybees

DON’T FEAR THE STING

One final difference: honeybees can only sting once before dying. Bumblebees can sting multiple times, but they do not form swarms like honeybees and they only sting when truly provoked.
Both bee types are safe enough to host in your backyard, so take sensible precautions and don’t let fear of stings prevent you from planting wildflowers to attract bees and reverse decades of habitat loss. You can either do this in your own yard or in unattended areas through the use of seed balls. You’ll not only be helping to save our endangered bees, but you’ll able to appreciate their differences for yourself!

BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HUMANE SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL RESCUES DOGS BEFORE THE START OF THE YULIN FESTIVAL!!!!!!!!!!! June 21st starts the Yulin Festival where they slaughter dogs, puppies, cats in the most inhumane ways possible and without mercy. This festival was stopped last year by the government and many partner groups stood with Humane Society International. Avaaz who received over 5million signatures on the petition to stop this festival at all cost was right there along with all advocates.. Right now troops are on the ground helping HSI and other advocate groups to rescue all animals from slaughter.. We must stand together sign any and all petitions, donate from your heart just a little to ensure that these rescues continue and we along with all of the Angels of Kindness stop these atrocities against all animals... WE ARE THEIR VOICE AND WE CAN SPEAK LOUD AND CLEAR....MAHALO

After being crammed into cages and transported for days without food or water, these dogs arrived at a filthy slaughterhouse in Yulin to be beaten to death for their meat.

main-feature

In the slaughterhouses, the fear is tangible as the animals are killed in front of each other. Some dogs witnessing these horrors lose control of their bowels, while others, desperately hungry and thirsty, drink the blood of those who died. The scene is appalling.

Please make an urgent donation right now to help us end the dog meat trade in China and protect all the world’s animals from cruelty and neglect »

This year, just before the annual festival on June 21st, a coalition of partner groups rescued all 135 dogs left in this building, and 65 of the dogs are now in the direct care of HSI at our partner shelter in northern China.

main-feature

They are the lucky ones. But across Asia, other dogs just like them are still at risk. Please, donate today to help care for these rescued dogs, to support our campaign against the dog meat trade and our efforts to protect animals across the globe »

These dogs have witnessed the harshest forms of cruelty and are in desperate need of both physical and emotional care. At our partner shelter, they'll receive critical medical attention along with fresh food and water. With love and care from staff members, they will also learn to trust people again.

main-feature

The dog traders and butchers involved with the dog meat trade are ruthless, but with you by our side, we’ll give them a tough fight as part of our campaign to shut down this bloody industry for good.

BREAKING NEWS FORM AVAAZ... Avaaz means Voice and the voice of all Avaaz members were heard in the courts loud and clear against the biggest organization Monsanto. Avaaz is a 47-million-person global campaign network that works to ensure that the views and values of the world's people shape global decision-making. Avaaz members live in every nation of the world. The team is spread across 18 countries on 6 continents and operates in 17 languages. Here is the decision made by the judges in the suit against Avaaz by Monsanto. Never cross Angels who work to save our Earth from Extinction. We work with God to preserve and protect all species and save EARTH from destruction!!! Mahalo ..

BRAVO AVAAZ....

Dear Avaazers,

Our hearing just ended, and the judge absolutely DESTROYED Monsanto's subpoena on Avaaz!!!!

He said the subpoena would have a “tremendous chilling effect”, saying "no member would want to have their privacy and their activity known" and actually gave Monsanto a lecture on democracy and free speech!!

Avaaz members in the courtroom spontaneously broke into applause and huge smiles at his words. Here's a quick video filmed minutes ago from our Campaign Director Iain Keith on the steps of the courthouse:

This subpoena was terrifying and would have had Avaaz spend months and hundreds of thousands of dollars digging up and handing over to Monsanto everything anyone on our team ever said or wrote about them for YEARS. Including even the email addresses and identities of our members who had sent messages to officials about Monsanto!

Even worse, lawyers told us that courts in New York tend to AUTOMATICALLY GRANT requests like this! Because usually, more info means more justice.

But then our community got involved. Over 200,000 of us donated, and we hired the best lawyer in the business -- Andrew Celli, who has taken on cases like this before and won. He and his team worked with the Avaaz team to write a ridiculously great takedown of the Monsanto subpoena. It's long and legalistic, but if you speak that language, it's a thing of beauty -- you can read it here.

Monsanto flew in a top lawyer, a man who's defended everything from asbestos to lead and arsenic. But between our briefs, and the powerful oral arguments, the judge was convinced, and took the incredibly RARE step of throwing out the ENTIRE subpoena!!! Normally they just narrow the scope of the subpoena to something more reasonable, but the judge couldn't find anything reasonable in Monsanto's claims about Avaaz!

Avaaz members, team and lawyers celebrating on the courthouse steps!

It's a moment to celebrate, but it may not be over.

Monsanto can still appeal, or come at us another way. But we've got an amazing win and precedent set, and an amazing legal team, and as ever, an amazing movement that will stand by, stand up, and speak truth to power when it threatens.

The purpose of these big legal attacks is to scare us. I have tears right now as I think about how, with the Avaaz community at our back, I really don't have to fear stuff like this. Because even the most powerful actors in this world, are not more powerful than the truth, than the power of good people coming together to work for everything we love, than the power of all of us in this incredible movement.

With immense gratitude,
Ricken and the whole Avaaz team.

PS - in another amazing example of our movement, an Avaaz member wrote in in response to our fundraiser, suggesting that the team reach out to Bayer, who are buying Monsanto, to ask them to drop this attack. He then took the initiative to write personally to both me and the CEO of Bayer. The CEO of Bayer actually called him hours later, saying he'd love to talk to me! So, we're talking on Monday. No idea yet what will come of it, but another example of the ridiculously wonderful movement that we get to be part of. Thanks so much to everyone for being you

BRAVO TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED IN THIS GREAT MOVEMENT AGAINST ONE OF THE LARGEST ORGANIZATIONS WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE THE MASS DEATH OF OUR HONEY BEES AND MARINE SPECIES.

Breaking News.. Humane Society International had petitions out for signing to stop commercial whaling in Japan, Norway and Iceland. Many countries voted against whaling and it showed in the outcome. More and more people throughout the world are coming together to stop the needless slaughter of an Endangered Species. We all speak from our hearts and we know to save our oceans, we must take a stand to save all marine life. All life is precious, marine, wildlife, plant life and all life brings balance to our ecosystems. We can speak very loud and we must continue to sign, share and voice our concerns to major governments, representatives and senators.. WE AS A PEOPLE MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN SAVING LIFE ON OUR PLANET... MAHALO

ALL LIFE HAS MEANING AND PURPOSE... BRAVO

I took the stand with them, signed their petitions, voiced my opinions to the Whaling companies.. all of us who joined with Humane Society International, we stopped the future slaughter of our whales in Japan, Norway and Iceland.  BRAVO...

A few weeks ago, I personally took a stand against commercial whaling in time for this year’s International Whaling Commission meeting. Many of our voices came through loud and clear. The IWC rejected Japan’s proposal to lift the commercial whaling ban.
Forty-one countries voted against Japan's proposal, and over 100,000 animal lovers added their name to HSI petition, making the strongest and simple case to the IWC: the world is moving away from commercial whaling, and countries like Japan, Norway, and Iceland should too.

HSI couldn't have accomplished this without outspoken and compassionate supporters like each of you. Thank you, as always, for lending your voice to the animals. We’re forever grateful for your continued compassion.

Breaking News ... EARTHJUSTICE...has just sent out the breaking news regarding our water ways saving them from the most notorious polluters nationwide and on the Islands of my Hawaii and so much more. Who is EARTHJUSTICE one may ask? Earthjustice is a non-profit public interest law organization based in the United States dedicated to environmental issues. It is headquartered in San Francisco, has nine regional offices across the United States, an international department, a communications team, and a policy team in Washington, DC. They wield the power of law and the strength of partnership to protect people's health, preserve magnificent places and all wildlife . The founders were Philip S Berry who was the first to see that the Earth needed a good lawyer and how valuable the court system was in protecting the environment. R. Frederic Fisher, who was noted for his bold action and H. D. Harris, originally from South Africa was a driving intellectual force behind the organization, which was founded in 1971. Though they have passed, their legacy lives on in full force to save our EARTH. Since their inception, they have been involved in most of our nation's most important environmental battles and have established valuable precedents in cases involving air and water quality, and especially our Endangered Species Act . They still lead the way in the recovery program of the most Endangered Wolf our Lobos, aka Mexican Grey Wolf. What a driving force they are for our nation and the environmental issues concerning our Earth's SURVIVAL.. Mahalo

On November 6, Henkin heads to the nation’s highest court in the land to settle a decades-long legal dispute involving a wastewater treatment plant, its pollution discharges, and a partially dead coral reef in Hawaiʻi. But the implications of this case stretch far beyond the sandy shores of Hawai’i. The Supreme Court’s decision will determine whether water all over America remains protected from pollution discharges. To protect everyone’s right to clean water, he’ll face off against the country’s most notorious polluters. If the court’s opinion doesn’t go Earthjustice’s way, it could have disastrous repercussions for clean water across the country.
The fate of the nation’s waterways rests in Henkin’s hands.
He’ll have 30 minutes to make his case.

The Supreme Court case formally named Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund v. County of Maui will be argued in front of nine justices cloaked in coal black robes, surrounded by thick, red- velvet curtains and bone-white stone pillars. The stark, solemn setting inside couldn’t be more different from where the case originates, in West Maui.
Each year, thousands of swimsuit-clad tourists flock to Kahekili Beach Park, where they snorkel in the clear, turquoise waters for the chance to swim alongside sea turtles and tropical reef fish and spot sea stars, sea urchins, and coral all colors of the rainbow.
But bubbling up beneath Kahekili’s famous reef is a dirty secret.
Kahekili Beach Park is home to sea turtles and tropical fish, but its famous reef is being damaged by wastewater.
Kahekili Beach Park is home to sea turtles and tropical fish, but its famous reef is being damaged by wastewater.
LEFT: COURTESY OF DON MCLEISH; RIGHT: MARLEY RUTKOWSKI
In 1982, the county of Maui’s wastewater treatment facility began discharging treated sewage into groundwater that eventually makes its way into Kahekili’s waters and the Pacific Ocean. Though treated, the wastewater contains dangerous levels of phosphorus and nitrogen, which promote excessive growth that smothers the reef, turning its vibrant colors to a dull, lifeless brown.
For years, Maui community groups complained to officials about the wastewater discharges and damage to the reef. Several studies backed up their concerns including a 2011 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) -funded study showing conclusively that the sewage flows end up in the ocean, and a 2017 study linking the sewage discharge to serious and ongoing harm to Kahekili’s reef.
Still, the county did nothing.
Though it knew the pollution reached the ocean, the county’s executive branch argues it’s not legally required to do anything about it because the pollution doesn’t flow directly into the ocean, but reaches the ocean indirectly through groundwater. The Clean Water Act, it argues, only covers direct discharges.
“According to Maui County, a polluter can avoid the law by taking a pipeline that discharges waste directly into the ocean and cutting it ten feet short of the shoreline,” says Henkin, who sued the county on behalf of four Maui community groups in 2012. “At the end of the day, waste from the pipeline is still polluting the water. And, under the county’s twisted logic, the polluter would get off scot-free.”
In 2014 and again in 2018, the courts rejected the county’s argument. The district court judge said accepting it would “make a mockery” of the Clean Water Act’s intentions.
After the rulings, Earthjustice and its clients tried to convince the county to fix the problem rather than pay millions of dollars in legal penalties for breaking the law. There even existed a straightforward solution: Use the excess wastewater for irrigation, a potential boon for dry West Maui.
“Our clients are all Maui residents who want their government to do the right thing,” says Henkin. “We never had an interest in having the county pay huge fines to the U.S. Treasury. After all, the county’s money is our clients’ taxpayer dollars.”
More than 16,000 residents petitioned the local government to settle, and the county council even voted to do so. But the mayor’s office declined to sign off, and the two bodies are still at odds over who gets the final call. In the meantime, the case proceeds at the Supreme Court.
The high court agreed to review the county’s case last February. A who’s who of dangerous polluters, including fossil fuel and industrial agriculture groups, quickly signed on to back the county and its dangerous position. The U.S. EPA under President Trump has also sided with the county, reversing three decades of agency guidance, under Republican and Democratic administrations, that the Clean Water Act regulates discharges of pollution that reach our nation’s waters through groundwater.
These groups want to create a loophole in the Clean Water Act, allowing dirty industries to pollute U.S. waters as long as the pollution isn’t directly discharged into a water source.
It would be a free-for-all for dangerous polluters.

With nearly 30 years of litigation experience, Henkin is no stranger to high stakes cases. During his time at Earthjustice, he’s frequently and successfully sued both the U.S. Army and the Navy; secured a rare temporary restraining order against a logging company intent on chopping down the habitat of the endangered Hawaiian crow; and set critical legal precedent designating habitat for endangered and threatened plants found only on Hawaiʻi.
Working closely with communities in Hawaiʻi keeps Henkin (second from right) inspired and engaged.

Justice Served: Case Closed for Over 40 Dogfighting Victims

November 21, 2019

In August 2018, at the request of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the ASPCA assisted in the rescue of more than 40 dogfighting victims being kept on a property in Bendena, Kansas.
A search warrant was executed by KBI at the property. There, we discovered both adult dogs and puppies just a few months old living in deplorable conditions. Some were tethered with heavy, metal chains and lacked adequate shelter. Some dogs exhibited injuries and scars commonly associated with dogfighting.

Following the rescue operation, Colton R. Albright was arrested and charged with dogfighting, possession of dogfighting paraphernalia and animal cruelty, as well as other non-animal related charges. Albright recently pleaded guilty to felony dogfighting and misdemeanor marijuana possession and received a sentence of 65 months in prison.
We are grateful to the KBI for their diligent role in pursuing this case and ensuring those involved were held accountable for the suffering inflicted on these animals. We’re also pleased that justice has been served and that the rescued dogs received the care they deserved. Most importantly, this outcome sends a strong message that animal cruelty, including dogfighting, will not be tolerated.

New Beginnings for Former Victims

Following their rescue, we provided care for the dogs—including an additional nine puppies born in our care—until disposition was determined, at which point most of them were placed with our network of our incredible response partners across the country—including Cedar Bend Humane (IA), Citizens For Humane Action (OH) and Dubuque Regional Humane Society (IA)—and made available for adoption.

Leona (seen above) was rescued and later placed with Dubuque Regional Humane Society.
“Leona had a warm heart from the very beginning. She was fearful at first, but soon opened up to the staff after she realized there was nothing to be afraid of and that we were here to help her,” says Amanda Shaffer, Shelter Manager at Dubuque Regional Humane Society. “Our partnership with the ASPCA has been a wonderful journey and we are excited we get the opportunity to help out more animals like Leona. I am thrilled so many organizations are collaborating to achieve our goals of saving lives and building families.”

Breaking News for the ASPCA Horse Action Team Legislation that will change the life of our horses, burros, dogs and victims of animal fighting. Horse Action Team who are they?? The ASPCA's Horse Action Team (HAT) are advocates who want to help protect and save our horses from harms way. Their primary goal is to end the slaughter of horses for human consumption by keeping slaughter plants from opening on American soil and by making it totally illegal to export horses to other countries for doing the same thing. To meet their goal of banning horse slaughter for good, they are always seeking local advocates who are willing to step up for horses by actively participating in advocacy work right where you live! If you are passionate about protecting horses, or have been looking for a hands-on way to help animals, this is the chance you are waiting for to get involved and make an impact.. I had the chance and I did meet with HAT right here in Englewood, Florida. We sat had coffee, something light to eat and planned the strategy, that was needed to help our local Congressman and Senators to hear are voice loud and clear. I met with them and wrote letters to many of our state representatives to encourage them to vote to save our horses. How exciting it was to meet them and their staff. Many of our representatives are very conscious of the concerns and issues, regarding the passing of legislation to ban Horse Slaughter Plants for good. I have spoken to many of them and we are lucky in our State of Florida we do have representatives with a heart for not only our horses, but saving and protecting our domestic pets from abuse, wildlife and the environment surrounding us. We are their only VOICE time to get involved, don't just talk the talk, but take the walk on the Wild Side!! Mahalo

Hi, Horse Action Team!

Great news! Yesterday evening, Congress made huge strides to protect our nation’s animals by releasing a package of FY2020 spending bills containing major victories for puppies, wild and domestic horses, victims of animal fighting, and domestic violence survivors and their pets.
The spending bills contain particularly important provisions to protect our nation’s horses by:
  • allocating an additional $21 million to the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Wild Horse & Burro program with the stated goal of shifting the agency’s program away from removing horses and burros off the range toward on-range, more humane care;
  • prohibiting funding for the operation of horse slaughterhouses in the U.S.;
  • preserving the ban on killing healthy, federally protected wild horses and burros or selling them to slaughter; and
  • extending that ban to wild horses and burros living on U.S. Forest Service land.
Although the wild horse and burro management program has been broken for decades, we can work to fix it so we can help our herds live wild and free, without the threat of lethal management tools. This federal funding represents a historic turn in the right direction for these majestic animals.

Read our blog to learn more about all the animal welfare provisions released in the FY2020 Appropriations bills, and please share it with your family and friends on social media. These provisions will soon be signed into law, so stay tuned for updates. Let’s keep up the good work for our nation’s horses!

Thank you and all the best,

HOW DO HONEY BEES EXTRACT NECTAR... HERE ARE SOME NEW WAYS

How do Honeybees consume nectar? By sucking and not just dipping their tongues, scientists discover

Bee’s tongue is adapted perfectly to lapping syrupy nectars

For over 100years, scientists have known how Honey Bees drink nectar. They lap it up.

They don’t lap like cats or dogs, videos of our Honey Bees drinking habits have been one of the great rewards of high-speed video. Dipping their hairy tongues rapidly in and out of syrupy nectar to draw it up into their mouth. Scientists have been convinced that this is the only way they drink nectar.

They have now discovered bees will also suck nectar, which is more efficient when the sugar content is lower and the nectar is less viscous. A high-speed video of bees drinking a nectar substitute in a lab shows that not only do honey bees have this ability, they can change their drinking mode in an instant.

Jianing Wu, an engineering and biophysics specialist, at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China, and the senior researcher on the experiment said that while honey bees excel at feeding on highly concentrated nectar, “we find that they can also flexibly switch the feeding strategy from lapping to suction”. He and his colleagues reported the results on Wednesday in the journal Biology Letters.

Alejandro Rico-Guevara, who runs the Behavioral Eco Physics Lab at the University of Washington, Seattle, and studies nectar-feeding in birds, also worked on the project. He said “this flexibility in nectar-drinking behavior means that although bees prefer the more syrupy nectars, they can efficiently feed on flowers whose nectar is more watery. “This has implications at many different scales, from pollination, for our food, all the way to the role they have in natural ecosystems,”  (New York Times)

As a beekeeper, I find this study to be fascinating, and I understand how our Honey Bees, our Pollinators are so efficient and how they are adapting to climate change, and the difference in our flowers in producing nectar and flowering to their fullest size, color, and their purest of nectars.

Our Pollinators, Honey Bees, Bumble Bees, are some of the most important species in our ecosystem in keeping us alive, as well as our planet!

BEEKEEPERS ARE THE KEEPERS OF THE “LIGHT” and to their survival

Breaking News.. Our BumbleBee is now on the Endangered Species list. Please take the time to read and educate yourself on the plight of our Bumblebee, their role as pollinators and they too along with our Honeybees can become extinct. We cannot live without their expertise, as our food sources will die, the planet will die, as well as the human species. Many scientists have thought that Colony Collapse Disorder has several possible causes none of which have been proposed. There is not a single proposal which has gained widespread acceptance among the scientific community. Their only suggested causes include: infections with Varroa and Acarapis mites; malnutrition; various pathogens; genetic factors; immunodeficiencies; loss of habitat do to climate change. A large amount of speculation has surrounded a family of pesticides called neonicotinoids as having caused CCD.s. The loss of biodiversity, destruction of habitat and lack of forage due to monocultures and bee-killing pesticides are particular threats not only for our honeybees, but our bumblebees and all wild pollinators. Light Beings are here to save and protect, so lets do our job.... do it right as our bees and other pollinators are counting on us!!!! Mahalo

Pesticides vs beesBumblebees don’t get nearly as much love as honey bees, but maybe they should. Sure they’re wild and they don’t produce as much honey as their “domestic” counterparts, but they help pollinate numerous fruits, vegetables, and wildflowers. Bumblebee species are declining in Europe, North America, and Asia due to a number of factors — including habitat degradation, pathogens, and pesticide use. Now, a new study analyzed the latter factor, focusing on popular pesticides called neonicotinoids, and what they found isn’t pretty, as NPR puts it. The pesticides apparently deter bumblebee queens from laying eggs.

Neonicotinoids are a relatively new class of insecticides that emerged in the 1990s. Compared to some of their predecessors, they cause less toxicity in birds and mammals. However, in recent years, they’ve come under increasing scrutiny due to their environmental impact, especially on bees and other benign insects. Neonics (as they’re also called) are systemic and move throughout growing plants. This means that traces of the pesticide reach the pollen, which the bees consume. Quite often, neonics have been found in areas that haven’t been treated, such as meadows or wildflower patches.
Because they spread so much, the impact they have on bees is far-reaching and hard to thoroughly assess — yet a growing number of studies associated these pesticides with honeybee colony collapse disorder (CCD) and loss of birds due to a reduction in insect populations. While these findings remain controversial, in 2013, the European Union (and some other non-EU countries) banned the use of such pesticides, and positive results were visible fast. The ban is only temporary for now, but the EU is considering making it permanent despite complaints from pesticide companies and some farmers which claim yields have gone down.
For most of the world, neonics are still going strong, and both bees and
bumblebees are paying a huge price

 Our Pollinators....

For the study researchers at the Royal Holloway University of London set up an experiment involving bumblebee queens. They fed the queens a syrup which contained traces of a neonicotinoid called thiamethoxam, similar to what a queen would be exposed to in real life.

These queens were 26% less likely to lay eggs when they were exposed to thiamethoxam. This isn’t saying that the population would only decline by 26% — but when they modeled the impact of this 26% decrease, they found a significantly increased likelihood of population extinction.
“Without the queen laying eggs, there is no colony,” says Nigel Raine, one of the scientists who conducted the experiment. Raine helped start the experiment, but has since moved to the University of Guelph in Canada.
The problem is that pesticide exposure is impacting bumblebee populations in conjunction with other factors, such as inadequate resources or pathogens. It’s difficult to say just how much of an effect all these stresses working together will have, but so far, it seems to be devastating.
Bumblebees are in danger in many developed countries and it’s becoming clearer and clearer that pesticides are at least partly to blame.
“Bees play a vital role as pollinators in both agricultural and natural systems. However, there is increasing concern about the state of wild bee populations. Nearly 10% of European bee species are currently considered threatened and bumblebees are declining on a global scale. The cause of these declines is thought to be a combination of factors, particularly habitat loss, parasites and diseases, invasive species, and climate change,” researchers conclude
