Dear Tia,
The big news! In response to the release of our most recent undercover investigation -- and the disturbing footage of a Nebraska pig breeding facility that supplies Hormel Foods -- Hormel released a public statement stating that they suspended sow operations at the supplier -- a company called The Maschhoffs, LLC -- pending an investigation. Watch the video and take action to demand better treatment for pigs at this facility.

The best thing we can do for animals in the wild is leave them alone. In one of our new lawsuits, we represent clients who are challenging the California Fish and Game Commission’s new rule allowing the use of GPS collared dogs during hunting. This new rule will have a negative impact on wildlife, because the dogs can range at greater distances from hunters, outside the range of verbal commands. This almost certainly means that more wildlife will be harassed before being killed, and also that legally protected wildlife will be targeted by hunting dogs. You can read more about the lawsuit on aldf.org.

The cost of cruelty just went up! Santa Cruz Biotechnology will have to pay $3.5 million for animal welfare violations in a settlement with the USDA. Although the $3.5 million is discounted from over $2 billion in potential liability, we commend the USDA for extracting a penalty that's ten times larger than anything that's come before it. Read more about the announcement on our websiteThe Animal Legal Defense Fund had previously sued Santa Cruz Biotechnology for its treatment of animals in a separate action.

This is one check we’re happy to write. After maliciously burning a Chihuahua puppy, Willie Bee Turner was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison, and prohibited from owning an animal for ten years. The Animal Legal Defense Fund stood by our reward offer and paid $5,000 to a tipster who came forward and provided crucial information to investigators leading to Turner’s arrest and conviction. We are grateful to the hard work of investigators and prosecutors who ensured justice for this poor puppy and secured the maximum possible sentence for this dangerous individual.

Thank you for your continued support, which allows us to make progress for animals in the legal system. We couldn’t do it without you!
