And now, even though that hiker was alone in protected grizzly territory and appears to have come near the grizzly's cubs, park officials are considering euthanizing the animal. Care2 member Richard Spratley started an urgent petition to Yellowstone Park Superintendent Dan Wenk to spare this bear from the death penalty — will you sign it today? Here's what Richard writes on his petition: This sow grizzly and cubs are accused of killing an experienced hiker. The park has announced they will euthanize her and her two infant cubs if they are able to link the hiker's DNA to the captured bears. If Yellowstone kills these bears, they will be making a tragic story even worse. There is inherent risk in hiking in grizzly country. Anyone attempting to do so needs to take proper precautions. Despite hiking in the park for many years, this hiker carried no bear spray, wore no bear bells, and had roamed far off the trail. He most likely surprised this sow and her cubs in their natural environment. She did what grizzly sows are famous for doing: defending her cubs from a perceived threat. This was a grizzly being a grizzly in grizzly territory. This grizzly is well known in the area. A 20 year old sow, she's been photographed and enjoyed by thousands of visitors over the years. She has does not have a history of aggression and has not previously been determined to be a "nuisance bear." She is, however a grizzly and deserves to live as a grizzly. She does not deserve to be killed because someone didn't take necessary steps to avoid a confrontation. The least they could do is transplant her and her cubs to a remote location far, far away if necessary. Killing these beautiful creatures will solve nothing, especially the innocent and infant cubs. Please sign and share this petition far and wide. This sow and one of her cubs has already been captured. The other infant cub is still wandering around helpless and likely scared to death. Please help save these magnificent creatures and allow them to live wild and free as bears were meant to be. They have just found out that Shell will soon officially submit its final Arctic drilling permit for approval.  This is Shell’s last hurdle before it can begin drilling for oil in the Alaskan Arctic this summer. We still have a chance to stop Shell’s plans.

The decision is President Obama’s to make and it could possibly come in the next 48 hours. 

It was the President himself who reminded us what our children will ask, “Did we do all that we could when we had the chance to deal with this problem?”

Last week, activists in Portland did just that. 

Ordinary people in Portland, Oregon, took extraordinary action to protect our environment by hanging from a bridge for nearly 40 hours or kayaking in front of a Shell’s icebreaker — blocking it from leaving for the Arctic.

Now we need to call on President Obama to take action and match the courage shown by those in Portland and millions around the world by denying Shell’s final permit to drill for oil in the Arctic. 

The last piece of the drilling puzzle for Shell — the icebreaker that was in Portland last week — is only days away. Once it arrives and the final permit is approved, oil drilling can begin.

President Obama can reject Shell’s final permit to drill in the Arctic and keep dangerous fossil fuels in the ground where they belong. Doing so would help secure his legacy as a climate leader and get the world one step closer to stopping runaway climate change. 

We’ve asked you before to send this message. And millions of people like yourself have done just that. But we have to continue sending our message until the President hears it. Tell President Obama to reject Shell’s final permit today. 

Join me one final time in calling on President Obama to block Shell’s dangerous Arctic drilling plan. Take action right now.

The President just released his Clean Power Plan, an effort that shows he understands the consequences of runaway climate change. 

We need him to do more than issue plans; we need him to take immediate, urgent action to stop Shell from drilling in the Arctic. He has the chance to do that right now.  

We can’t let up, not now — not after the courage demonstrated in Portland. Not after the courage that millions of people around the world have shown standing up to Shell’s insane plans. This is the President’s climate legacy right here and we can’t let him off the hook: 

Tell President Obama to reject Shell’s final drilling permit. 

I don’t know what’s going to happen and what the President will decide. I only know that we have to do everything in our power to get him to do the right thing. 

I also know that whatever he decides, our campaign to save the Arctic and stop runaway climate change will continue on stronger than ever. It’s just getting started.

Thank you for your unwavering commitment to protecting our environment. Mr. Obama is right, there’s no plan B.

Wolves have another victory in Idaho!!!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome!

The Idaho Fish and Game Department has announced that no wolves will be killed in the federally-protected Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness during the winter of 2015-16.

The announcement comes after a lawsuit brought by Defenders and other conservation groups to stop the killing of wolves to boost elk populations in federally-protected wilderness lands like Frank Church Wilderness.

The Frank Church Wilderness is the largest national forest wilderness area in the Lower 48 States and a core habitat for gray wolves in the western United States. I know you share my view that wilderness should be managed as wilderness, not as a game farm for favored hunters and commercial outfitters.

The state has previously planned to kill up to 60 percent of the wolves living in Frank Church, in large part to artificially inflate elk numbers for hunters. Those wolves can breathe easier for another winter after this latest decision.

Still, it’s important to remember that this reprieve is only temporary and that we must remain vigilant in our efforts to defend wolves in Idaho.

 Defenders of Wildlife will continue to work tirelessly to protect wolves throughout the Lower 48.
